Armoured Car Monaco — Discreet B6/B7 VIP Security Transfers

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Monaco Fleet Team

FFGR Monaco operates armoured vehicles to the B6 and B7 protection standards for principals who require ballistic protection without visible security apparatus. The S-Class Guard — Mercedes-Benz's purpose-built armoured saloon produced at the Sindelfingen special vehicles facility — provides B6-level protection as standard and B7-level protection on request, in a vehicle that is visually indistinguishable from a standard S-Class at normal viewing distance. For clients attending sensitive meetings, public appearances, or events with elevated threat profiles in Monaco and the Côte d'Azur, the armoured transfer provides protection without communicating vulnerability.

B6 and B7 Protection Standards

The BRV 2009 ballistic resistance standard defines protection levels for armoured vehicles from B1 through B7. The B6 level provides protection against 7.62x51 mm M80 ball ammunition fired from a rifle at a velocity of 833 m/s — the standard military round used in most NATO-calibre battle rifles. The B7 level adds protection against 7.62x51 mm M61 armour-piercing rounds at the same velocity. In both cases, the entire glazed area of the vehicle — including the windscreen, side windows, and rear window — meets the same protection standard as the structural panels, ensuring there is no weak point in the protection envelope.

The S-Class Guard achieves these protection levels through a combination of high-hardness steel in the floor pan, A-pillar, B-pillar, and roof structure, and multi-layer polycarbonate and glass composite in the glazed areas. The total added weight is approximately 320 kg, distributed across the structure to maintain the vehicle's centre of gravity close to that of the standard S-Class. The guard vehicle retains the standard S-Class engine — the S580 V8 biturbo producing 503 hp — which provides adequate performance despite the additional mass.

Indistinguishable Exterior — Operational Discretion

The primary operational advantage of the S-Class Guard over a visibly modified security vehicle is that it does not identify the occupant as a protection target. A vehicle with external armour modifications, visible antenna arrays, or run-flat tyre indicators communicates to observers that the occupant is a person of sufficient status or risk profile to warrant protection, which may itself attract attention. The S-Class Guard, seen from the road, is a new-generation S-Class in a standard colour with standard wheels — a common sight in Monaco.

FFGR operates its guard vehicles in the same colour and wheel configuration as its standard S-Class fleet, making it impossible for an external observer to distinguish a guard vehicle from a standard one. Our chauffeurs assigned to armoured vehicle service do not wear different uniforms, do not carry visible equipment, and follow the same arrival and departure protocols as standard chauffeur service. The protection is invisible until it is needed.

Underfloor and Blast Protection

The S-Class Guard's protection envelope extends beneath the vehicle. The floor pan includes a ballistic steel liner and a blast attenuation layer that provides protection against improvised explosive devices positioned under the vehicle. The fuel tank is self-sealing — a puncture from a projectile causes the elastomer liner to expand around the perforation and prevent fuel loss. The door seals are explosive-pressure rated, and the fresh air intake can be closed from inside the cabin to prevent the introduction of chemical or smoke agents.

The run-flat tyre system uses reinforced sidewall inserts that allow the vehicle to continue at up to 80 km/h for a minimum of 30 kilometres after complete tyre deflation — sufficient to reach a secure location from any point in Monaco or the immediate Côte d'Azur area. The fire suppression system covers the engine compartment and fuel tank and is triggered either automatically by heat sensor or manually from the driver's position.

Route Security and Close Protection Coordination

FFGR armoured vehicle service is offered in two configurations: chauffeur-only for clients whose close protection team travels in a separate vehicle, and integrated service where the FFGR driver coordinates with the client's CPO team as part of a motorcade or convoy. In the Monaco context, where the Principality's national police provide security coverage for official visitors and high-profile events, FFGR coordinates the armoured vehicle routing with the relevant security authorities to ensure consistent route coverage.

For clients who do not have their own close protection team but require armoured vehicle service, FFGR can facilitate the introduction of certified close protection officers through our security network. These individuals are not employed by FFGR but are known professionals whose credentials, jurisdictional clearances, and operational history have been verified. The combination of an armoured S-Class and a qualified CPO in the front passenger position provides a protection capability comparable to a state-level security detail at a fraction of the logistics complexity.
