Menton, Èze & Antibes — The Three Villages of the Riviera

April 28, 2026 · 8 min read · FFGR Monaco VIP Team

Beyond Monaco and Cannes, the French Riviera contains three villages that reward the traveller who arrives properly equipped: Menton, the last French town before the Italian border, perfumed with lemon trees and Baroque architecture; Èze, a perched medieval village above the sea that offers one of the Riviera's most complete gastronomic and visual experiences; and Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, and the Cap d'Antibes peninsula, home to the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc and the most sought-after private villas on the coast. A private chauffeur transforms each of these from a pleasant day trip into a genuinely curated experience.

Menton — The Italian Border and the Lemon Capital

Menton is 9 km from Monaco — 12 minutes by car along the A8 or 25 minutes by the scenic Basse Corniche. It is the easternmost French city on the Riviera and shares a border with Ventimiglia, Italy, which makes it an ideal starting point for day trips into the Italian Ligurian coast: San Remo (20 minutes), Portofino (1h15), and Genoa (1h45) are all practical itineraries with a private car and no language barrier.

In Menton itself, the highlights are the Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh (one of France's finest tropical gardens), the Musée Jean Cocteau collection, the old town market on weekend mornings, and the Fête du Citron in February — a world-scale festival of lemon and citrus sculpture that draws 240,000 visitors in three weekends. For the Fête, road access requires advance planning; our driver knows the authorised approach routes.

Èze — A Perched Village Above the Mediterranean

Èze village sits at 429 metres above the sea, accessible by a single road from the Moyenne Corniche (D6007). The approach is part of the experience: three kilometres of hairpin turns with open sea views that culminate in a medieval village entry gate. The village itself is barely 300 metres across — the car can only reach the lower parking area, and the final approach is on foot through cobblestone lanes.

The reason to arrive with a private car and chauffeur is the flexibility it provides. The Château Eza restaurant (two Michelin stars, terrace view over Cap Ferrat and the sea) requires a table reservation months in advance — but the transfer logistics are straightforward: Monaco to Èze in 13 minutes via the Moyenne Corniche. The Parfumerie Fragonard laboratory at the foot of the village offers private guided tours for groups of two or more. We coordinate both the restaurant and the perfumery visit as part of a composed Èze day programme.

The Three Corniches — Choosing the Right Route

The stretch of coastline between Monaco and Nice is served by three parallel roads at different altitudes, each with a distinct character. The Basse Corniche (D6007) hugs the coast at sea level through Beausoleil, Cap d'Ail, and Villefranche — the most scenic but the slowest. The Moyenne Corniche (D6007/D2564) runs through Èze village — the most dramatic, best for first-time Riviera visitors. The Grande Corniche (D2564) runs at the highest altitude past La Turbie and Roquebrune — the fastest, with no traffic lights, and offering panoramic views of the Principality from above.

We recommend: Basse Corniche for outbound journeys when the client wants to see the coast; Grande Corniche for return journeys when speed matters. For an Èze visit, the Moyenne Corniche is non-negotiable.

Antibes — The Cap, Eden-Roc & Picasso's City

Antibes is 30 minutes from Monaco by the A8, or 40 minutes by the coastal road. It contains two entirely distinct destinations. The old town of Antibes — including the Musée Picasso housed in the Château Grimaldi, the covered market at the Marché Provençal, and the ramparts overlooking the sea — is a half-day programme for culturally inclined clients. The Cap d'Antibes peninsula — home to the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Villa Eilenroc, and the private villas that inspired the entirety of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Tender is the Night" — is a different experience entirely.

The Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc is the most iconic hotel on the Riviera. Access for non-guests is through a restaurant reservation or a private event invitation. For clients who are guests of the Hôtel du Cap, we manage daily transfers between the hotel and Monaco, Nice Airport, Cannes, and Juan-les-Pins, adapting to the client's daily programme without advance notice requirements.

Composing a Three-Village Riviera Day

A well-composed Riviera day visiting all three villages — Menton, Èze, and Antibes — requires a logical sequence and approximately eight to nine hours. We recommend: Menton market morning start (9:00-11:00) → Èze village and lunch at Château Eza (12:30-15:00) → Antibes old town and Musée Picasso (15:30-17:30) → return to Monaco, Nice, or Cannes accommodation by 19:00.

This programme requires advance table reservations at Château Eza (which we handle), morning market timing awareness, and knowledge of the Antibes ZTL zone (which our driver navigates automatically). Total driving distance: approximately 95 km. Total driving time: approximately 2 hours across the day.

Engaging FFGR Monaco for a Riviera Villages Day

A single-day programme visiting Menton, Èze, and Antibes requires a full-day vehicle booking (typically 8-10 hours). The vehicle — usually a Range Rover SV or Mercedes S-Class depending on group size — is reserved from the first pick-up to the final drop-off. We provide a suggested itinerary with timing and confirm the restaurant reservation as part of the arrangement.

For clients who wish to extend the programme into the Italian Ligurian coast, we coordinate the border crossing at Ventimiglia and the Italian ground segment through our network. WhatsApp or email to FFGR Monaco at least 48 hours in advance to arrange a Riviera villages day.
