Lombardy produces some of Italy's most celebrated wines in an arc of appellations stretching from Franciacorta's sparkling wines on Lake Iseo to the Lugana whites on Lake Garda's southern shore and the Valtenesi reds above the western bank. From Monaco, this wine belt is reachable in three to four hours — a long day by car, or the beginning of a two-day programme that combines cellar visits with nights at Gardone Riviera or Sirmione. FFGR Monaco operates guided wine excursions to Lombardy with pre-arranged cellar access at both boutique producers and major estates.
Franciacorta: Italy's Champagne Country
Franciacorta DOCG, centred on the hills south of Lake Iseo between Brescia and Bergamo, produces Italy's only traditional-method sparkling wine with the depth of ageing and complexity to stand alongside Champagne. The appellation's leading estates — Ca' del Bosco, Bellavista, Berlucchi, and Cavalleri — each offer private cellar visits and tastings, arranged through our concierge well in advance.
A Franciacorta visit is typically arranged as a morning programme followed by a lunch at a local estate restaurant before the drive to the Lake Garda shore for the afternoon. The drive from Monaco to Franciacorta is approximately 3h15 via the A7 and A4 from Genova to Brescia.
Lake Garda: Lugana and Valtenesi
Lake Garda's wine geography divides neatly: the southern shore and morainic hills produce the Turbiana grape as Lugana DOC — a white wine of considerable ageing potential and increasing international standing. The western hills of the Valtenesi produce Groppello-based reds of considerable rusticity and charm. For an oenological day on the lake, we typically combine a Lugana producer on the south shore with a Valtenesi estate on the west bank.
The town of Sirmione on its peninsula at the southern tip of Garda is the most scenic base for a Lugana tasting circuit. The ruins of the Roman Grotte di Catullo above the lake provide a singular context for a morning before the cellar visits begin.
Logistics: Day Trip or Overnight
A full Lombardy wine day is long from Monaco — departure at 06:30 to reach Franciacorta by 10:00, cellar visits through midday, lunch, Garda in the afternoon, and a return to Monaco arriving around 22:00. This is achievable but demanding. We recommend the overnight option for clients who want to combine a serious tasting programme with appropriate rest.
Recommended bases on Lake Garda include the Villa Fiordaliso in Gardone Riviera — a Liberty villa on the water with six rooms — and the Grand Hotel Terme in Sirmione. FFGR coordinates with both properties for arrivals, luggage, and next-day return.
Cellar Visit Coordination
Private cellar visits at Franciacorta estates require two to four weeks' advance booking. At major estates — Ca' del Bosco in particular — private tastings with the estate sommelier or winemaker can be arranged but require a formal request and confirmation. FFGR handles this coordination as part of the programme booking.
For clients who want to ship wine home from the visit, we coordinate with a Brescia-based wine shipper who handles EU and international export documentation and temperature-controlled delivery to Monaco addresses.
